The Reserve Bank of India set out to demystify money and the history of monetary instruments by creating a Monetary Museum for the public. The ambition was educational and institutional.
The museum needed to
■ Make the evolution of money easy to understand for a general audience
■ Celebrate India’s monetary history across millennia
■ Communicate the role of the Reserve Bank of India in protecting and growing the Indian economy
■ Safely display rare and ancient artefacts of high historical value
This was not intended to be a static archive. It was envisioned as a public-facing knowledge institution that could build awareness, trust and financial literacy, helping reinforce the RBI’s role as a guardian of economic stability.
EuMo was engaged to translate this ambition into a museum experience that was accessible, engaging and future-ready.

The challenge was comprehension of monetary concepts across audiences.
India’s monetary history spans barter systems, early coinage, colonial interventions and the eventual formation of a central bank. Presenting this complexity through conventional museum panels would have limited engagement and understanding.

The defining insight was clear —
For public institutions, understanding grows when history is experienced.

EuMo approached the project as an integrated spatial narrative, where artefacts and interpretation worked together, rather than competing for attention.
Design Intelligence was applied through
■ Structuring the museum as a chronological walk through the evolution of money across centuries
■ Integrating artefacts directly with graphic storytelling rather than separating display and explanation
■ Replacing conventional text-heavy panels with illustrations, caricatures and hand-rendered visuals
■ Designing display systems that were secure yet visually open and engaging
■ Creating a layered experience that could speak to students, families, researchers and casual visitors
Each historical milestone was treated as a distinct narrative moment which was part of a continuous journey. This allowed visitors to grasp both the detail and the larger arc of India’s monetary evolution.
This project was delivered under our erstwhile brand RJB-Design, in collaboration with NID.
