Designed as an immersive, narrative experience, it preserves his philosophy, collaborations and spirit beyond chronology. More than remembrance, the exhibition functions as a living archive that continues to inspire dialogue, reflection and creative freedom.

Astad Deboo was one of India’s most influential contemporary dancers and a global cultural force. He was an artiste whose work transcended form, geography and convention. For EuMo, Astad was also a close friend, mentor and source of inspiration.
Before his passing, Astad entrusted EuMo and his family with a deeply personal final wish:
to tell the story of his life’s work through a retrospective exhibition experience that would place his journey within the larger context of contemporary dance, collaboration and artistic freedom.
The ambition was not commemoration alone.
It was to create a living archive, a travelling experience that would preserve Astad’s spirit, provoke reflection and inspire artistes long after the exhibition concluded.

The challenge was emotional as much as curatorial.
Astad’s life could not be reduced to a linear timeline or conventional exhibition format. He was spirited, dynamic and defiantly non-conformist, a true citizen of the world who collected memories, friendships and influences across continents. His presence filled every room he entered.
The defining insight was clear —
Astad Deboo’s legacy lives beyond chronology, in energy, collaboration and movement. The exhibition had to feel like a conversation with Astad himself: intimate, expansive and unconstrained.

EuMo approached the project as an experiential narrative.
Working closely with Astad’s family over more than a year, we translated his personality and philosophy into space. The exhibition was structured into six immersive zones, each representing different facets of his personal and artistic journey.
Design Intelligence was applied through
■ Spatial storytelling that mirrored emotional highs and lows
■ Artefact-led intimacy using Astad’s costumes, handwritten diaries, photographs and personal objects
■ Vibrant visual language and amorphous frames reflecting a life lived without boundaries
■ Immersive audio-visual content that brought performance, memory and voice together
■ Living installations that encouraged visitors to perform and feel his energy

To honour Astad’s collaborative legacy, artistes and institutions from across India and the world came together to recreate performances choreographed by him, transforming the exhibition into a collective act of remembrance and continuation.

Over a 10-day period, the exhibition attracted hundreds of dance professionals, art enthusiasts, students and members of the cultural community, forming an eclectic audience united by curiosity, respect and admiration.
The exhibition —
Preserved Astad Deboo’s life and work as a shared cultural archive
Inspired young artistes through direct engagement with his philosophy and process
Reaffirmed the power of collaboration as a living artistic practice
Created a space for collective reflection, memory and gratitude
The experience received widespread media coverage across publications including Architectural Digest, The Times of India, Hindustan Times, Indian Express Group titles and others, amplifying Astad’s legacy beyond the exhibition walls.
